Looking at Square America

My friend Barbara introduced me to a site called Square America that is a cornucopia of found pictures of strangeness from the “Golden Age” of America like Polaroids of a “Key Party” and a long-term project where a guy wore women’s bikinis and took photos of himself on the roof of the Philadelphia YMCA over a ten year span.

Interesting as hell and warped to an alarming degree you can really see that the “as seen on TV” love-affair with how great it all was before is really more romanticized that you could ever imagine. My particular favorite is a run-down of photos they got at a flea market of this one woman taken from the time she was a baby until the early 80’s when she’s obviously in her late 50’s and believe me, it’s showing.
I recommend it highly. If for nothing but realizing how normal you’ve got it, or don’t. Your call.
